Can Concrete Be Painted?

Posted on July 15, 2026July 15, 2026

Exposed Aggregate Concrete Adelaide short answer?

Yes.

The better question is whether you should.

We’ve had plenty of homeowners ask about painting old concrete because they’re looking for a quick refresh. Maybe the driveway’s looking tired. The patio has a few stains. Or the plain grey colour just isn’t doing much for the house anymore.

Painting can work.

It just isn’t the miracle fix some people expect.

Paint won’t hide underlying problems

Here’s where people get caught out.

A tin of paint can change the colour of concrete, but it can’t fix movement, cracking or poor drainage.

One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that people often focus on how the surface looks instead of why it looks that way.

If a slab is lifting because of reactive clay soil or tree roots, paint won’t stop it. If water sits in the same spot every winter, the coating won’t solve that either.

You’ll still have the same problem.

It’ll just be a different colour.

Preparation is where the job succeeds

Most people assume painting concrete is like painting a bedroom wall.

It isn’t even close.

Concrete holds dirt, old sealers, grease, tyre marks and moisture deep in the surface. If all that isn’t removed properly, the paint struggles to bond.

We’ve seen plenty of painted driveways that looked fantastic for the first few months.

Then the Adelaide summer arrived.

Tyres got hot.

The surface expanded.

Before long, the paint started peeling where the cars were parked every day.

People blame the product.

More often than not, the preparation was the issue.

Not every surface should be painted

The funny thing is, some concrete already looks good once it’s cleaned properly.

After doing hundreds of driveways, we’ve found that a pressure wash and a quality sealer can completely change the appearance of exposed aggregate or decorative concrete without covering the natural finish.

Painting those surfaces usually hides the very thing people paid extra for in the first place.

Plain concrete is a different story.

If it’s structurally sound and you’re simply after a fresh look, paint can be a reasonable option.

Just go into it knowing it will need maintenance down the track.

Adelaide weather has a say

Our climate isn’t gentle on outdoor coatings.

Long dry summers, intense UV and the occasional winter downpour all test painted surfaces.

One thing we’ve noticed is that north-facing driveways tend to show wear earlier because they’re exposed to the strongest afternoon sun.

Coastal suburbs can be tougher again.

Salt in the air has a habit of finding weak spots over time.

That’s why the products and preparation matter just as much as the colour you choose.

Sometimes replacement makes more sense

Nobody wants to hear that.

We get it.

But if the concrete is badly cracked, uneven or reaching the end of its life, painting is often delaying the inevitable.

Almost every callback we’ve had started with someone trying to cover a structural issue instead of fixing it properly.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to save money.

You just don’t want to spend it twice.

A fresh slab might cost more upfront, but it’ll usually give you decades of reliable service instead of a coating that needs regular attention.

So, can concrete be painted?

Absolutely.

Just don’t expect paint to perform miracles.

If the concrete underneath is in good condition and the preparation is done properly, it can give older surfaces a fresh new look. If the slab itself has bigger issues, it’s worth dealing with those first.

At Pro Concreting Adelaide, we’ve always believed the best results come from being honest about what the concrete actually needs. Sometimes that’s a clean and a coat of paint. Sometimes it’s a proper repair. And sometimes the smartest investment is starting again with a surface that’s built to last.
